discussion and assignment 26

Discussion 1:

Kirk (2016) provides numerous examples of interactivity, but our text is static. Interactive visualizations are an excellent tool when utilized in an appropriate environment. Find a news article that is less than five years old on the internet with interactive visualizations. Interact with the visualization. Interpret what the visualization is telling you.

  • Does the interaction add to the presentation and interpretation of the data, or is it beautification?
  • Does your interpretation deviate from what the author states? Why or why not? Be specific, provide examples.
  • Are there any assumptions that need to be met? Are they discussed?
  • Are there opportunities for misinterpretation, based on the presentation of data? Explain.

Make sure to include all references and citations. You should have more than one source, and the news article should be one of them!

Do not write a regurgitation of the article. Do not reference an interactive visualization generated for an example or tutorial. Do not reference the same news article as your peers.

Remember, your initial post on the main topic should be posted by Wednesday 11:59 PM (EST). Your two following posts should be commenting on your classmates’ posts on different days by Sunday 11:59 PM (EST). You should end the week with three total discussion posts.

A quality post is more than stating, “I agree with you.” Maybe you should state why you agree with your classmate’s post. Additionally, post some examples or find a related topic on the internet or the University of the Cumberlands’ library and comment on it in the discussion post.

Discussion:2

For this week’s discussion, find a visual representation of data with the excellent annotations, considering what Kirk (2016) states about annotation in the textbook.

  • Describe why you think the one you chose is superior to any other, considering the annotations.
  • Do not use a graphic another student has already discussed.
  • When replying to a peer, ensure you annotate whether theirs or yours are better and why.
  • Make sure that you reference the visualization.
  • Ensure you include citations for all references.

Your initial post should include your references, thoroughly present your ideas, and provide evidence to support those ideas.
