In a televised address Saturday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his government intends to employ an initiative by which electronic counterterrorism measures to track the movements of people who might be infected with the coronavirus would be deployed. He did not specify the techniques to be used but officials have hinted they would include monitoring individuals’ cellphone locations, presumably without their consent, as well as the more sophisticated electronic intelligence and data analysis that Israel is known to have in its terror-fighting arsenal. This measure has sparked civil liberty concerns but Israel’s PM believes it is “an acceptable price for slowing the spread of the virus.”
